CALIFORNIA was created in the summer of 2020 by award-winning writer and author, Art Tavana (that’s me). It began as a paean to Joan Didion and the creeping melancholy of suburbia. A lot has happened since then. CALIFORNIA is as much journalism as it is nonsense literature. It is as illogical as the Santa Ana winds; as gorgeously nihilistic as James Dean zooming down the PCH in a drum-tight Porsche.

The first issue of CALIFORNIA was an essay about John Wayne and the Shah of Iran. The second issue was an unedited interview with Oliver Stone.
